Out of ‘death’ NEW life!

When Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Spokane, gathered the end of August for a pot-luck picnic, it was a celebration of a ‘different’ sort. Yes, it was a Lutheran pot-luck, with lots of hugs and laughter, but rather then talking about what was to come, the gathering shared memories of what had been. Approximately 75 former members, and two pastors, (Rev. Alex Schmidt, and Rev. Duane Anderson) who had served the congregation, celebrated and gave thanks for the congregations 112 years of ministry. Last year, when Our Saviors decided to close, they wanted to honor the saints that had gone before them, and they set up a permanent endowment. The congregation, after much prayer, voted on the ministries that they would support. This year, the endowment, managed by the ELCA Foundation distributed in the name of "Our Savior’s Lutheran" $23,680. The recipients were: EWA-ID Synod for its SHARE endowment, and Lutherhaven Ministries, each receiving $4,736. ELCA Domestic Disaster Response and the EWA-ID Fund for Leaders in Mission, each receiving $3,552. The ELCA World Hunger Appeal, ELCA Global Mission, and the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Inland NW, each receiving $2,368. "Until Jesus comes again, ministry will indeed happen in Our Saviors name!"

THANKS be to God!

The  ELCA Mission Investment Fund (MIF) is partnering with the Women of the ELCA to provide a MISSION INVESTMENT FUND SERVICE CENTER at the Seventh Triennial Gathering in Salt Lake City (2008). MIF will staff a service center at both the Convention and Gathering. Any member of the Women of the ELCA who opens a personal MissionPlus account, will be able to cash checks from that account at the Gathering. Another benefit is that such investments will count toward MIF's Women of the ELCA Challenge. Contact Margie P. Fiedler, margie.fiedler@elca.org; 208-664-7973 or call the Mission Investment Fund at 877-886-3522 (toll free) or visit www.missioninvestmentfund.org for more information.
